A Writer’s Day

So, yesterday, I had my screenwriters group in the morning. We had a very good session giving notes on two scripts. It’s the benefit of having a long, consistent history together: you know the others are interested in helping you to the best work you can deliver.

After that, I headed to the nearby Writers Store, where there was an afternoon panel about focusing on Oscar nominated films and their scripts. (Well, it’s the Writers Store, we weren’t going to talk about pretty pictures – heh.)

Writers-Store-2014-Oscar-script-panel

The panel consisted of (left to right) Matt Lohr as moderator, with Steve Kaplan, JM Everson, Carole Kirschner, and Eric Edson.

They had a wide range of opinions about the nominees, which made for interesting discussion. Matt did a great job of coming up with questions for them (they’d been sent the questions beforehand, to prepare), asking such things as which one of the best picture nominees did they think shouldn’t be there, and what would they have included instead.

I wish I had been able to see more movies last year, because I would have liked to responded to their comments from knowledge of the films. But the only one of the nominees I had seen was Captain Phillips. But I enjoyed their discussions of points.

(The panel was sponsored by Michael Wiese Productions, and all the panelists have books from the publisher. Who also just happens to be the publisher for my Creating Graphic Novels. I realized how long it’s been since I bought books, because I didn’t have any of the panelists’ books, although I’d seen them listed, particularly Kirschner’s Hollywood Game Plan and Everson’s Shakespeare for Screenwriters. Now I want to buy the all. I guess that’s want the Amazon Wish List is for.)

The Creature Greets a Gnome

About a week ago, my hostess Carrie came home with a charming gnome she found while out shopping. The Creature, who has been lazing away while I labor on web content writing, ventured out to meet the gnome.

Creature-and-gnome

During some after-dinner reading, the Creature decided the gnome was getting a bit cheeky, so he felt compelled to tweak the new resident’s ear. The scarecrow dolls were startled by this rudeness and didn’t know what to make of it. I think the Creature needs to get out and socialize more.

Sticking to the Point

I’ve been reading through The Collected Letters of C. S. Lewis, Volume lll: Narnia, Cambridge, and Joy 1950-1963 lately. The flow of his correspondence from amiable acknowledgements to his readers to business exchanges with his publishers to the relaxed exchanges with academic colleagues and friends is fascinating. (And I certainly recommend the volume to other readers.)

CS-Lewis

In the course of commenting on the quality of a colleague’s work on William Blake, the editor annotated Lewis’ letter with a quotation from An Experiment in Criticism. In part, Lewis says of the truly instructive literary criticism that he had encountered:

Find out what the writer actually wrote and what the hard words meant and what the allusions were to, and you have done far more for me than a hundred new interpretations or assessments could ever do.  (An Experiment in Criticism, 1961, ch. 11, p. 121)

Now, I know I read An Experiment in Criticism first when I was an undergraduate, although I’m not sure precisely when. I know that I appreciated Lewis’ approach to scholarship. I’d also read much of Dorothy L. Sayers in that same period, and she too avoids wandering very from consideration of primary texts.

The point of these musings is that when I encountered the quotation “out of the blue” (as it were), I had a sudden flash of the period when I was working on my Master’s thesis. I was going to be writing on Beowulf, and had a general idea of where I was going. But over the course of a year and a half, I read through just about all the Beowulf scholarship that was available to me. There were many works that had various theories about the work, of course. There were many pieces that did a lot of citing and quoting of previous scholars and arguing with them.

The problem for me, however, was that very little of what anyone had to say addressed the points I wished to make. So, I went to my thesis advisor and said, “I’ve read all these scholars over the last year and a half. And none  of them really go where I’m going. I don’t want to spend a lot of time quoting them and then saying, ‘But So-and-so does not take this idea far enough.’ Can I just do a straight textual criticism of the poem?” She said, “Yes.”

Looking back now, it occurs to me that Lewis’ comment and approach probably had a great deal to do with my choice to pursue a textual criticism. It was rather brash of me to throw away all the scholarly padding I could have had. But I know now that I really do agree with Lewis. Working from what an author actually wrote is far more rewarding than picking over the encrustations of other commentators.

The Nomads During the Holidays

During the holidays I house-sat and took care of a pair of cats. They were very sociable cats. Boo was a purring machine and she turns it on as soon as she is touched.  She even allowed the Creature to hitch a ride on her (briefly).

Boo-and-Creature-net

Boo liked to curl up and snooze a lot. Her housemate, Kilroy, however, was much more active. He liked a good game of Pounce at least twice a day. And toward the end of my stay, he also decided that I was a good thing to be sat upon when he wished attention (regardless of whether I was working on my computer or not). Kilroy only tolerated the Creature.

All in all, though, it was a pleasant holiday season.

The Creature Reviews My Weekend

So Saturday, I was out all day, and the Creature wanted an explanation.

I told him that in the morning I had my screenwriters group, like I often do. So he accepted that. Then I explained that in the afternoon, after I’d picked up my mail at the PO Box, I went to a screening of Silver Bells, since it had been written by my friend Andrea Nasfel. I assured him it was a fine movie, and the time with friends was great. He was okay with that.

What he really wanted to know was this stuff I returned with.

Saturday-excursion

So I explained that my friend Vicky Morris had gotten the book signed by the author for me, and she gave it to me when I met her family for dinner. He said that didn’t explain the stones and the bit if Irish Spring. “It’s a white and green stone, not a bit of soap,” I said. But he was kind of grumpy. So I pointed out the name on the bag for the polished stones.  The butterfly pendant I got just because I liked it.

The truth is, he just felt left out of the adventure.

So yesterday afternoon, I assisted my hostess, Barbara, in doing some holiday decorating. The Creature had to check out our efforts. I could see he wanted to grump about it, but he ended up approving it all.

CAPS Banquet Honoring Floyd Norman

I’ve been a member of CAPS (the Comic Art Professional Society) for about three years now, and have missed the last two annual banquets, much to my regret. So last month, when some unanticipated funds came to me just before the deadline for making a reservation for the banquet, it seemed opportune to use some to pay for my reservation. It certainly gave me something to look forward to in a trying period. And although I can’t say I know Floyd, on the occasions he’s been at CAPS, I’ve found him to be utterly charming. So I wanted to go to this one.

I car-pooled with my friend Jim MacQuarrie, and realized another aspect of his personality. He really is one of those people who would love to see Real Life be like a musical (especially a wacky one), where at opportune moments people burst into song. His musical selections for the drive to the venue were entertaining.

When we got to the location, I revealed that I had a stow-away date, but that he wouldn’t be a problem because he wasn’t dining.

Dinner-date

The centerpieces for the tables had Toy Story 2 related items, since Floyd had worked on that film. It all looked very festive.

Floyd made a point of circulating and chatting with folks before dinner.

Floyd-Norman

The program included a number of folks speaking warmly of their friendship with him. All funny and delightful.

All in all, it was a lovely  evening out, in great company, with the pleasure of celebrating a man who obviously brought a lot joy to his work – and thus to all those who have seen his work.
