The Hummingbird and His Perch

I’d run across a photo of a blue hummingbird sitting in the cup of a flower and fell in love with the image. The shapes and lines and colors all appealed to me. So I added it to my collection of photo references.

This week, I finally had the time to see if I could capture it in my artwork. I took some pictures along the way.

I decided that getting a sense of the flower was what I needed to get down first. It was the key to the rest.

The fun part about stippling, especially when working in color is that you can get a great deal of subtlety to an image. That was what I did with the flower.

Then there was coloring the bird.

Filling in the rest was a challenge, because I wanted to get enough variation in the background (which was not well defined in the original photograph that I worked from). But in the end, I was pleased with what I achieved.

UPDATE: I have, since this drawing was completed and named, learned that the bird is actually a Kingfisher, not a Hummingbird. Oh well. Such is life. 🙂

About Sarah

Now residing in Las Vegas, I was born in Michigan and moved to Texas when 16. After getting my Masters degree in English, I moved to Hollywood, because of the high demand for Medievalists (NOT!). As a freelance writer and editor, I found Nevada offers better conditions for the wallet. I love writing all sorts of things, and occasionally also create some artwork.
