Batman: “Chipping In”

Batman leapingThis comic book script (posted here as a writing sample) was written as I learned to handle the differences in a comic book script from those of a screenplay. The story of Batman working with the Black Canary (and her partner Oracle) amused me. It was written during the early original run of The Birds of Prey title. But I had always liked the partnering of Batman and Black Canary dating from a Brave and the Bold issue from the 1970s.

Since the time this script was written, things have changed in the DC Universe (particularly in the presentation of Barbara Gordon – she’s no longer in the wheelchair, for one thing).

Black Canary statuetteThe story starts when Bruce Wayne’s name turns up on a hit list. The police urge him to hire a body guard until the killer is caught, so he hires Black Canary.

Should there be aspiring comic book artists out there on the internet, they are welcome to use portions of this completed script to develop their pages and panels for portfolio review. All I ask is that should any artists use it in such a fashion, that they include a note on their pages “From a script by Sarah Beach”. I’d also be interested in seeing scans of the completed work, if possible. Please let me know by emailing me at consult@scribblerworks.us.

Batman, Black Canary, and Oracle (and other ongoing characters) are property of DC Comics. All rights to them belong to DC Comics. This script is offered here simply as a writing sample.

BATMAN: “CHIPPING IN” by Sarah Beach

About Sarah

Now residing in Las Vegas, I was born in Michigan and moved to Texas when 16. After getting my Masters degree in English, I moved to Hollywood, because of the high demand for Medievalists (NOT!). As a freelance writer and editor, I found Nevada offers better conditions for the wallet. I love writing all sorts of things, and occasionally also create some artwork.
